On the evening of Monday, Feb 13, at Ryerson University, in my Write Like a Journalist class in downtown Toronto, I was partnered up with Dheepa, a fellow classmate, on an in-the-field assignment, interviewing people around campus. Being a soft-spoken individual, it was clear that this assignment was out of her comfort zone. When asking her what her initial thoughts were on the assignment, she mentioned that “intimidating is the best word to describe [it]” as she had never approached strangers and asked them questions before. She also had “the feeling of being somewhat frightened” about whether she would get interesting answers. This was the beginning of a transformation that I witnessed in real time. As we embarked on our adventure, we fulfilled a couple of my tasks first, as I had done some pre-planning and knew exactly where I wanted to go. Maybe I was just imagining this, but I sensed she was avoiding getting started on her tasks so suggested that we get one of hers checked off of the to-do list next.
