Several cases on the court calendar today were continued, including the murder trial of Cornell Arthur Allen. Prosecutors said Allen, 36, allegedly shot and killed his friend, 41-year-old Stefan Delondon Johnson, on June 6 at the Ventura apartment Allen had shared with his girlfriend. Prosecutors said Allen thought Johnson was sleeping with his girlfriend and shot Johnson 16 times. During a preliminary trial, Paul Drevensteadt of the Public Defenders Office, said Allen was protecting himself against Johnson during an altercation that occurred before the shooting. Allen called 911 and said he shot someone who was not welcome in the home, Drevensteadt said.Allen's jury triall was continued to Sept. 24. He remains in jail in lieu of $750,000 bail. In other news, an 18-year old man facing vehicular manslaughter charges for running over his neighbor was also continued. Erik Lopez was ordered to return to court on Sept. 24 for his jury trial. According to prosecutors, Lopez was allegedly involved in a domestic dispute with his “on-again, off-again” girlfriend in July 2013 at the 1200 block of Halifax Court. Lopez allegedly got in his car and lost control when hit another car parked in front of 65-year old Verdena Owens' home. Witnesses say Owens was standing in her front lawn when the car struck and killed her. During a preliminary trial, defense attorney Ron Bamieh said Lopez is a young man who is “confused and very apologetic.” Bamieh said Lopez knew Owens. Lopez is charged with gross vehicular manslaughter, assault with a deadly weapon, spousal battery and child endangerment, officials said. He is out on $150,000 bail. Lopez could face a maximum of 14 years in prison, said prosecutor Erik Nasarenko.Also continued was the case of 62-year old Luis Manuel Gonzalez, who is accused of three counts of lewd acts on a child under 14 years with a special enhancement that the abuse involved multiple victims. Prosecutor Brent Nibecker said one of the victims was allegedly molested in Los Angeles County in Aug. 1998, but Ventura County has jurisdiction over the case. The other alleged incident with the other victim happened in November, Nibecker said. Gonzalez's Early Disposition Conference was continued to Oct. 15.Another man, James Edward Frye, 46, also appeared in court this afternoon. He is charged with three counts of lewd act on child under 14, sexual battery and misdemeanor annoying or molesting a child. Nibecker said the alleged incidents occurred between 2000 to 2013 and involved one victim. Frye was ordered back in court for an a jury trial on Oct. 27.
