We've arrived in San Francisco! The event starts at 10 am Pacific (that's 1 p.m. Eastern, or about 1 and 1/2 hours from the time this note went up.). Join us in the hours before for pictures from the scene and some pre-show commentary.
We're just getting setup right now. Press registration opens up at 9, and the event itself begins at 10. Expect more pictures soon!
Just hopped in line for press registration. Testing the mobile blogging set up. There are about 100 people here so far.
Usually people show up pretty late. I blame the killer weather for the early turnout.
Or badged, at least. Still have another half hour until we're in the theater
Hey San Francisco sun: chill out for like half an hour, okay? Nasty sun + massive mob of gadget writers = oh god, the sweat, it's everywhere
The number of (presumably modified) white iPhones around me (not in the hands of apple employees) leads me to believe that gadget bloggers might be a bit nerdy.
25 minutes left until go time!
Broadcast guys and their big ol' cameras are heading in. That means we're next!
Yikes. A bunch of the apple folks have been here since 4 am. Intense.
We're on our way into the theater!
We're in, seated, and WiFi'd up! Hurrah!
When we were walking in, they were playing Beatles, leading everyone to go say "OMG BEATLES ON iTUNES" to each other. Now it's Alanis Morissette. Surprisingly, no alanas morissette rumors.
5 more minutes, folks! Tell your friends. We have pie.
Self-shot photos at Apple events are worth 20 Facebook points.
Steve has entered the stage
The crowd cheers.. and cheers.. and cheers. Going on about 30 seconds now.
"My partner in crime, Steve Wozniak, is here today"
Woz stands, the crowd cheers
First an update on Apple retail:
You've all seen our fifth avenue store. We've been opening some amazing stores lately. The first one, in Paris, near the louvre.
"We're also really excited about our second store in China, which we opened recently in Shanghai"
Our third big store, in London.. We got this whole building. It's our second large store in London, right in its heart.
"We now have three hundred Apple retail stores. This London store was our 300th."
"We're in 10 countries: US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, China"
"Remember when MacWorld used to have 30,000 visitors? Now some of our stores get more than 1 million visitors per day."
"Now, I wanna talk about iOS"
"Its made these three products possible..", showing the iPhone, iTouch, and iPad
120 million iOS devices shipped so far
"People are throwing around a lot of numbers about how many users are activating on their platform. For us, that number is 230,00 users"
App Store has now reached 6.5 billion downloads. That's 200 apps every second.
Steve: "Boom! That's another 200!"
"We've got over 250,000 apps on the App Store, with 25,000 of those being iPad apps"
