Getting ready to start at myPublicSevices - James Munro, Director of Patient Opinion will be opening the conference
James explaining the background to the day - Why myPublicServices? prompted by experience of working on Patient Opinion over the past 5 years. Having met lots of people who want to do similar feedback ideas around public service - mypolice etc -sharing experiences, skills, obstacles, learning together - how do we relate from the outside inwards and the inside outwards to create public value?
need to rethink what we mean by public services
we see on patient opinion that as people share their experience they are giving back to the health service and the community - relationship between the user and the service: 'Your experience is your gift'
it's not about being the recipient / consumer - it's about co-creating the services together
using example of Iron Bridge - it was designed and built as if it was made of wood - because they didn't know how to do anything else - metaphors of the old technology with new technology
now the practical info...
Denise Stephens - Enabled by Design now up
She found the experience depressing, a constant reminder of her situation. So instead she found out what equipment she needed and started to look for mainstream alternatives that were more visually appealing and could fit within her home
set up an online community as a platform to share experiences of using assistive equipment = enabled by design
to turn her idea into something tangible she worked with Social Innovation camp - by end of weekend had prototype website and a business plan - www.sicamp.org/
Denise is talking about how she set up
Enabled by Design enabledbydesign.org
[We are having some problems with the connection - apologies]
Q What is your business model?
We've been thinking a lot about how to make it sustainable - we do user engagement really well so we think manufacturers will benefit from our expertise and do consulting
"Equipment provision feels like it's a bit stuck in the Dark Ages a little bit" and we think there is scope for lots of innovation
"The system is quite closed" says Denise Stephens of Enabled by Design.
user engagement is key - enabled by design want to partner with manufacturers to produce equipment that people with disabilities actually want to have around - deign for these products hasn't changed since the '70s - where's the innovation?
next up - Tom Loosemore, 4ip
describes 4ip fund -
www.4ip.org.uk
"We are looking for truely transformational propositions" but he reminds us that Channel 4 is a business is looking for sustainable models.
Tom - I believe that our values of 'do it first', 'inspire change', and 'start trouble in public interest' create a very powerful basis for inspirational public service ideas
"There are still government departments totally designed around physical geographical constraints - why do you need to do that?" Tom Loosemore of 4ip
Tom- 10 years ago a friend and I built a website called upmystreet.com - at our own cost. Thinking about semantics - calling it 'my' - the importance of language in politics - the most important thing about today is that it's called MY public services, that we are taking control of the agenda
