Gen X/Y thinks very different from each other – a real disconnect between the two.
Gen X: "How can I be different"
Gen Y: "How can WE be different?"
Gen X = exclusion, Gen Y = inclusion
When you shift from a ME culture to a WE culture ... That's the shift that's happening now.

With social media, you can target certain groups of people and don't need to worry about what other groups are doing.
If you do a really good job with your message, Gen X probably won't see it anyway.
Most of you probably feel alone in your churches because you actually get it. Then you have to go back to your church and explain it to some board or council and it doesn't work.
The Church needs to allow Gen Y to "discover" it.
People will hold interest in a brand for about 3 months.
You can play this game where you're coming up with the "next thing" and you'll never get there.
Trends suck. You don't want to take part in trends.
The most effective advertising in brands is when they have a specific audience. (Who's your audience, church?)
Geico slaughters State Farm because they know who their audience is.
New generation started in 2001 ... They'll be like Gen Y x100.
Gen Y is a generation of "experts" ... Self-proclaimed and otherwise.
Gen Y doesn't necessarily want a leader, but they want a group of friends that are doing interesting things ....
Leadership with Gen Y is a very sensitive subject.
Gen Y: Not how do I lead, but how do WE lead?
Is there such a thing as brand-loyalty for Gen Y? No. Probably not. If it's better than they'll switch to it.
Gen Y often leads the culture.
Young adults are disillusioned by the political system. Skeptical about real change and whether it will happen or not.
Millenials believe that Steve Jobs can have a bigger impact than the government. They look to corporations for people who can actually make change happen.
Millenials vote with their dollars.
The definition of a "guy" is changing for Gen Y.
Guys feel permission to explore what they're interested in ... Not just what the "typical" guy should like.
Guys are now entering the creative, business, etc. Guys are able to do what it is that they actually want to do!
As the Church, you can help define that.
Lifetracking: Gen Y is utilizing technology to let us know about their lives.

Track your data for personal improvement. This is big for Gen Y.
Do the right thing. Suddenly I have to make a decision about everything in my life. Should I use public transportation or bike? Local or green? Add a dollar for the special cause or save it?
All these decisions people have to make, their looking for a moral code.
Where do they get that code? Friends and Internet.
Gen Y feels spiritual when they make the right decisions.
When they do good for the world or for their body or friends, it is a spiritual act.
"Am I doing the right thing?" That's what Gen Y wants to know.
