Garo Vaporciyan (http://tinyurl.com/ygwwraz) presents Polycarbonates Feedstocks

How to make (DPC) = phosgene+2 phenol + 2 NaOH -> DPC + 2 NaCL
Garo Vaporciyan’s giving the Polycarbonates presentation now. We taped a short summary of his talk; it’s at
tinyurl.com
Garo's explaining that polycarbonates are used to make DVDs, bullet-proof glass, CDs, computers, astronaut’s helmets.
Garo’s been working 7 yrs on a new process to make intermediates for polycarbonates producers called diphenyl carbonate or DPC.
Garo says Shell’s DPC process uses less energy so a polycarbonate producer’s CO2 footprint would be reduced + would cut costs too.

Ben Lefebrvre of ICIS asks Garo about cost to produce polycarbonates the Shell way.
David Van Kleeck is giving the OMEGA presentation now. A quick video of Dave giving a synopsis is at
tinyurl.com
OMEGA stands for Only Mono-ethylene Glycol Advantage.
Dave says that OMEGA uses less energy and less water than other methods. Better for environment + lower costs for producers.
Two OMEGA plants are already running; Shell’s own OMEGA plant will open this Nov. in Singapore. Check it out at
tinyurl.com
MEG is used in polyester fibers, film, surgical supplies, engine coolants and plastics.

David shows us a picture of the Shell OMEGA pilot plant. Its 4 stories tall.
Mark Rosenzweig editor of "Chemical Processing" asks questions about the scale of the OMEGA pilot plant in Houston.
Edward van den Heuvel just started his EOR presentation. To see a video synopsis of his talk, go to
tinyurl.com
Edward van den Heuvel describes a Shell Chemical technology for using detergents to improve oil recovery from reservoirs in Enhanced Oil Recovery.
EOR stands for ‘enhanced oil recovery.’
Edward’s says that about 2/3 of the oil that’s been discovered around the world is still in the ground because it’s too hard to get out.

Shell Chemicals is developing a surfactant, a kind of soap, to flush that oil out. It’s like laundry detergent and it’s biodegradable.
What we're working on
The estimated North America EOR oil could be sufficient to meet 10-15 years of NA’s current oil consumption.
There are 119 billion barrels of oil in the U.S. that can be recovered using water based EOR
Shell innovated the chemical process ASP - a way to break the bonds between water and salt.
