Watching a video with Bill Hybels, Henry Cloud, Patrick Lencioni, Carley Fiorina and David Ireland.
Talking hiring, firing and other staffing challenges.
Lencioni: "Ask 'what would other people say about you?'"
Fiorina: When interviewing, "Listen more than you talk."
Lencioni: "Build a strong culture. People don't want to work in an organization where they don't fit."
Cloud: "I'm a big believer in process. Let the process do it's work."
Hybels: "I would rather endure the pain of not having someone in a position than having the wrong person in a position."
Conversation is now shifting to board challenges.
Cloud: "The board has to have its own covenants and values for how they're going to work together."
Lencioni: "Building trust is hard to do when you only see yourselves once a month."
Lencioni: "You can't build trust if you can't be vulnerable."
Ireland: "Sometimes boards are ineffective because the wrong people are on the board."
Hybels: Willow has 4-year terms and board members have to step off for one year.
Hybels: "A plurality will usually lead an organization better rather than just one person."
Apparently this panel discussion will be part of a video curriculum training that will be available in the future.
This next session is on firing staff.
Fiorina: "People consider it compassionate not to be honest with people. It's not. That's disrespectful."
Fiorina: "A firing should never be a surprise."
Ireland: "Retrain the person. Reposition them. Retire them."
Fiorina: "People don't want to have the tough conversations."
Hybels quoting Jack Welch: "The kindest form of management is the truth."
Hybels: "In Christian circles, we think the kindest form of management is avoidance."
Lencioni: If you choose avoidance, "Are you prepared to demotivate your strong performers?"
Fiorina: "The more clarity you can give people, the better it is."
Oops... It's a 3-hour DVD curriculum that's already available.
