Waiting for my pre-conference breakout session to begin. College Ministry 101. Why am I in a breakout for college ministry?? Because if 80% of college students don't think a relationship with Jesus is relevant, I want to know why.

6 concerns w/ traditional approach to College Ministry. Young adult services 1) rarely accomplishes what we think 2) temporary solution 3) overly focused on the church service 4) inherently preaches disunity 5) makes discipleship more difficult (separating generations) 6) has teaching difficulties

Possible contributing factors to the Gap: 1) we end up teaching Christian faith as law (we teach as a prescription for proper behavior rather than fostering faith) overtime we have to adjust our teaching philosophy away from law. It's not about law, it's about faith

2nd & 3rd possible contributing factors to the Gap are linear approaches to teaching and para-church mentality. Ministries are silos. No continuity as one person passes from elementary to high school to adult. Each ministry has it's own leader with it's own mission statement. Is it time for a different approach?

Potential solutions: 1) develop continuity in every aspect of ministry 2) have an overall structure of nurture

4th possible contributing factor to the Gap is the lack of understanding College-age ministry. The role of college-age ministry is the transition one from student life to adult life. Not from one silo to the next but from one life-stage to the next.

2 Timothy 2:2 / Titus 2 Principle {18-25 yr gap: College pastors need to spend time with older believers cultivating a heart of discipleship} Discipleship is commanded in scripture b/c it is not natural. Help older believers to understand they need to be a part of something bigger. -Chuck Bomar

We put so much pressure on college students to figure out who they are in this stage of life. They're desperate to identify themselves based upon what the world tells them. The question is, what does God tell them? Chuck Bomar says if they never wrestle this down in this stage in life, they may never do it.
