Hahahaha this video is great! Makes me really glad to be part of GetUp - thanks everyone!
by Sam3/6/2010 12:56:02 AM
Thank goodness someone is putting Abbott on the spot and showing his climate "policy" for the farce that it is. Go GetUp!
by Bec3/6/2010 2:22:43 AM
Great video!

Fantastic
by Helen3/6/2010 5:51:12 AM
Cheered me up! But laugh aside, the danger is till there. A lot of work still to be done to prevent him from getting to power.
by Claudia3/6/2010 5:59:11 AM
Wooo GetUp! Makes me proud
by Amy3/6/2010 6:01:42 AM
He is just like John all huff and puff the great Ozzie Knocker come on Tony lets sort out climate change it does exist
by David Mather3/6/2010 6:10:35 AM
Well I found this effort great. Just hope it doesnt give him any positive publicity.
by Sally3/6/2010 6:11:56 AM
Good campaign. be careful - you might get ome backlash from people pointing out the mobile billboards are contributing to carbon emissions.... just a thought.
by Sam3/6/2010 6:21:16 AM
Good one Get Up. Tony seems to be of the old school. Still living in the 60's like Little Johny. Climate change is an issue Tony so lets be real about it. How about a fund raiser to buy Tony a 2010 calender and maybe some board shorts
by Al3/6/2010 6:25:05 AM
Abbott reckons he is a climate change hero so I am not sure the message got through his self delusion shield.
by Andrew3/6/2010 6:27:40 AM
Not the brightest drip on the planet Tony!
by Chris3/6/2010 6:39:18 AM
Brilliant action from Getup confronting Abbot with his own images of demented denial.

great work getup!!
by joel3/6/2010 7:18:09 AM
Um... shouldn't we be more concerned with KRudd digging us a black hole and therefore severely limiting our ability to protect the environment?
by ish3/6/2010 7:19:12 AM
No wonder Tony Abbot is laughing. His face and body plastered at Sydney Airport and on mobile billboards is a great advertisement (even if negative) and at ABSOLUTELY NO COST TO HIM!
by Bernard3/6/2010 7:21:38 AM
great work folks time to show everybody what a dunce the man is. The sea will rise and get everybody including him.
by Colin Walpole3/6/2010 7:26:18 AM
The billboard is very funney. BUT, the point about climate change is that abstinence IS the point - it's about reducing emissions and that means walling instead of drivint; insulation and blinds instead of air conditioning etc!!!
by Janette3/6/2010 7:47:43 AM
Not sure I'm cool with a billboard that is designed to address climate change being driven around on trucks and motorcycles. Was the carbon produced off-set?
by What the?3/6/2010 7:48:57 AM
Interesting, but probably fills his cheer squad out in conservative Australian public land with even more sick affection for him. As for those of us who don't have our heads in the sand, we still don't. So, the net benefit? Unfortunately probably not much. The greens are losing political ground, the opposition under mad uncle are making ground, and Kevin07 doesn't seem to care about climate change efforts unless they win him votes. We need to change tack, the current approach I think reaches the wrong audience and in the end people will vote with their hip pockets and emotions in mind. Can't getup and friends start targeting industry and giving the public at least a chance to choose where they spend their money based on easily available information on environmental standing amongst corporations? Can't we investigate further legal means? Can't dirt be dug up and exposed on the fossil fuel interests - so eroding their sympathies amongst the public? Can't the environmental movement CHANGE IT'S IMAGE and start appealing to(not turning off) the majority of conservative Australians? Maybe some of these things can REALLY have an effect on emissions. As it stands however, the battle is being lost and NGO's around the country are using the same old tricks - appealing mainly to themselves and their subscribers. It's not that this 'won't' work, the problem is it HAS FAILED. Time for us to 'Get...Real'. Sorry if this offends.
by Anthony3/6/2010 8:01:48 AM
good job getup. keep getting our message across.
by tricia3/6/2010 8:19:26 AM
I agree with Anthony - this ad and this approach doesn't cut it. Clear, unambiguous, evidence/science-based approaches are the only way to communicate the realities to pollies and public who think there are "two sides" to the "climate debate".
by ben3/6/2010 8:22:21 AM
Well done comrades, keep it coming GetUP Abbot
by Dave3/6/2010 8:39:04 AM
HetUp, until now I'd (maovely) assumed that you were a necessary and intelligent organisation with the future of our kids and our world at heart. Obviously, I was wrong.Maybe you've been round the pollies too long, but to stoop to their pathetic banter (throwing around $100,000!!!) at such a critical time as this, offers little hope to those of your supporters who see the bigger picture...

Me again, I've been stimulated by Jude's contribution. I agree. GetUp, this is no laughing matter. If the best you can do with 100,000 dollars is to crack a lame joke and at the same time advertise for Darling Tony, then the plot has been lost. If we keep cracking jokes, being light hearted, beating bongos at protest marches (read - walk against warming), what image is projected? Liberal voters , right wingers, climate change skeptics, and others, do not look at bongo beating and get inspired..they scoff.
by Anthony3/6/2010 8:59:43 AM
Humour is a great device and so is the moving image, unfortunately you don't have a good grasp of either.Next time you have 100K to play with, why not canvass the ptofessional writers & filmmakers among your membership, so we can collaborate with GetUp and be far more effective..
by antoinette starkiewicz3/6/2010 9:04:51 AM
I dunno about you guys being so critical of this campaign by GetUp…Aussies love irreverent humour (illustrated by the huge success of shows like The Chaser’s War etc.) & if you can make people smile/laugh then you have their attention & they become open, friendly even; heck it even made Mr Abbott himself laugh & all this could be good for the bipartisan politics required for climate change legislation to be enacted. I would not like to see EVERY campaign using this tactic because climate change and/or political policy really are not funny, but when used in a timely fashion it can have value. ‘Laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone.’ Ella Wheeler Wilcox
by D3/6/2010 9:10:20 AM
This is one of the weakest actions from getup and something i'm embarrassed to be a part of. Am I? I have been very involved in climate change actions with getup but this campaign never crossed my desk. It makes me think that getup is particularly un- democratic. This ad is lame, cheap, polluting and totally wide of the mark. What the **** has Tony abbot's pants or his religious views got to do with australia's lack of action on cli ate change? It's like an ad about al gore in his underpants to complain about bush's war in Iraq
by Colin 3/6/2010 9:15:39 AM
It gets attention and it makes a point.
by Joel3/6/2010 9:25:19 AM
Sorry Ben et al…there are no ‘only way…approaches’ to communicate anything to everyone. Try to open your minds and be lateral. Some of you people below really seem a little miserable. Rent a crowd protest marches & the assoc. negative boo squad are what lots of mainstream Australians are sick of; & yes their votes are needed. What about a message of hope & positive affirmation leading to change; (instead of negative reinforcement of stereotypes regarding the image of protest organisations in the minds of everybody)? This could start with laughter.
by D3/6/2010 9:30:41 AM
Does seem GetUp is compromising their integrity a bit here. But maybe desperate times call for desperate measures. Just seems a shame to stoop to this low form of politics. It may alienate supporters and distract from the real issue. It is pretty funny though lol
by Sup3/6/2010 9:38:30 AM
Funny but may I say perhaps a bit below the belt. Don't ever like when the attack becomes personal
by BB3/6/2010 9:55:45 AM
I found it amusing, and felt that it was a fair way to draw attention. The truth is, nobody is going to read unambiguous scientific facts on a billboard. They tend to be dry and uninteresting. This way, people see the amusing image and the slogan and if they are interested, they will read a book or jump on wikipedia. Forcing science at people will make them turn off, and while nobody wants to see Tony in his toggs, the image will burn in along with the message beside it. There will always be haters, people will always think they can do better, but I think you did a fair job with what you had available.
by Alex3/6/2010 10:01:16 AM
If Tony hadnt wanted his magnificent physique all over the billboards he should not have arranged the photo crew to come to the beach with him or he could have worn his board shorts. He chose to use his body to sell himself to the public as Mr Average Ozzie Bloke - so it seems fair game to me. Sure got my attention.
by Christine3/6/2010 10:54:13 AM
Funny, but too personal. It as started people thinking about what Abbott's views are on climate change and this has lead people to discover that his policy reflects abstinence. Unfortunately Abbott's political views are crossing over to exploit his religious views. Let's just remember that the chat is all about climate change no religion (even though Abbott started it by flaunting his religious persona tro the media in the first place, two wrongs don;t make it RIGHT).
by Rowie3/6/2010 10:59:37 AM
Polititical leaders of Australia we need a climate change policy hat addresses issues an we do not want it to hit this generation HARD!
by Rowie3/6/2010 11:00:33 AM
Who is it who flaunts his religiosity outside of his church every Sunday morning for a photo op? It certainly ain't Abbott. And why is it that Greg Combet won't guarantee any reductions in carbon emissions at all with an ETS? And who's Treasury is saying Labor's ETS won't see a reduction in emissions until the mid-2030's?
by David Ready3/6/2010 11:07:10 AM
The email I received alerting me to this said I should see Tony Abbot's hilarious response to the action. His response wasn't hilarious. Julia's was lame as usual. It's a good idea, but the mixed message of abstinence (Abbot's no-sex-Lent ridiculousness) and his stupid views on climate change might be over the heads of many people and may alienate some.
by Steve3/6/2010 11:10:18 AM
"Benign genocide" is what we are doing/ As Tony Abbott surely knows, the Market will fix everything, don't worry.
by D.B. Valentine3/6/2010 11:16:53 AM
I believe in the Market/The almighty Market
by D.B. Valentine3/6/2010 11:23:03 AM
Not one of GetUp!'s better efforts. An expensive flash in the pan unfortunately.
by Dion3/6/2010 11:26:23 AM
Join Tony Abbott & I as we do a midnight prayer tonight to the Market hoping it will work its miracles & make everything alright. He was John Howard's ass boy & like a good clone a climate change sceptic. SO if you're a Market Fundamentalist too join in at Midnight :)
