Enjoying live session with Rich Allen in BISD. Highly interactive. may not blog much as I'll be participating! Woot! No numb bum here.
Great use of music in presentation #richallen
man has a math and drama background...makes for logical chaos...lots of theatrics and common sense - #richallen
most people take copious notes during a presentation then file it away on the shelf "death row" #richallen
telling isn't teaching - if iso we'd all be teacher o' year - there r other channels of delivery more engaging w/ more retention #richallen
begin w/ low risk communication tween participants 2 build the engagement - low risk=higher participation set context and tone #richallen
dissecting the first hour of our presentation to show the why behind the how. #richallen
the standard intro - stand up, give name, where do you work...is not protective...doesn't build the engagement gradient - #richallen
important to give learners the time to transition from listener to speaker (prep them BEFORE asking if they have questions) #richallen
If you don't allow time for transition the verbal people in the room (transition faster) will dominate the conversation #richallen
#richallen don't get OUT of your comfort zone - EXPAND it
teach people not content #richallen
teaching twitter to #richallen
afraid I may have overwhelmed #richallen with my passionate (read: I talk to fast) diatribe about twitter
never assume when a group walks back into room from break that they come back with the same attitude #richallen
a "soft opening" helps to refocus, allows for tardy arrivals, helps participants say that one last thing they need to say #richallen
#richallen always has you say thank you (or similar) 2 the people u share w/. It gives value to what's shared and indicates that it's over.
#richallen it's good for you to say thank you - we are in a fast paced world and need to thank people.
#richallen how often do we get thanked for our energy and effort. Thank 3 people a day - see what happens.
#richallen are you a "we" person or an "i" person?
We people value inclusion - I people value choice (control) - #richallen
#richallen - if staff development were this fun and engaging, we'd have to kick teachers out at the end of the day. (HINT HINT)

We are all "we" people and "i" people - but we lean the way we learn. #richallen
RT @educationweek: Blog: What Does It Mean to Involve Teachers in Policymaking?: We have two exciting new additions to our ever-expan... ...
The "we" & "i" behaviors apply to r students - give 'em what they need. If they need a group get 'em 1-if not let the work alone #richallen
#richallen use "i" and "We" observations as a presenter to determine how much time you spend in groups or individual work -use it to adjust
#richallen random thought - he has a presenter's voice...great range and control - works well and keeps you listening
#richallen be aware of the "we" & "i" dynamic and use it to get what you need out of the training!
#richallen - teaching adults is demanding - do what you need to do (and be ruthless about it) to get your battery charged.
#richallen - go out with a group or stay home alone - just do what you need to recharge.
#richallen find balance - you'll never try anything new if your battery is not charged and you aren't excited about what you're doing.
#richallen cracking us us with descriptions of a BBQ at a "we" person's house and an "i" person's house. Hillarious!
#richallen discussing the use of music in presentations...add energy, gives you permission 2 be loud or feel secure (white noise) boundaries
#richallen the tone of music sets the pace physically, intellectually, and creatively.
#richallen if you're not using music - USE IT! But remember...use it for a PURPOSE!
#richallen music (like technology) should be used with purpose and FOR A REASON!
#richallen
#richallen best quote of the day - "I'm an over-clicker"
#richallen music is an effective boundary clue - start talking - stop talking, etc. Use the power of music to help with behavior management.
#richallen great example of PE teacher that uses music to get girls dressed and into the gym by the end of a song. Great use in a classroom.
#richallen choose your music by which mood you want your participants to be in when you stand up in front of them!
#richallen music can release seratonin and dopamine to make you feel good! Don't you want your audience to be in a good mood?
#richallen play quiet music in the background while people are working.
#richallen shy people participate better in class activities and feel safer doing so if there is music in the background.
#richallen be careful with music with lyrics (especially popular ones) because it becomes about the music.
#richallen if you use music at the beginning, use music at the end too
#richallen get 'em out of your presentation (class) on a high note - so they bring back that positivity when they come back in.
#richallen stealing the exit music ideas for my presentation at #PVAMU and ask them to dance their way out!
#richallen use music on your parent night!
#richallen going to really recommend to our new HS principal that he use music daily on his campus
#richallen this guy freakin' rocks! If you haven't had him come speak to your people...you're missing out! Dude!
#richallen experiencing the idea of introducing novelty in presentations...song playing? red red wine.
#richallen - thematic music connects with what you're talking about in that moment. It plays into the way that people learn.
#richallen your voice is an auditory tool as well - pitch, tone, volume, speed!
#richallen just be careful that you don't end up as the king of dorky - use it wisely!
#richallen it should be subtle and used in moderation.
#richalllen has a book for helping you set up your presentations

#richallen a brief blurb about the technology involved and how to use it.
#richallen start with 60's music as it is the most recognizable music
#richallen end of day one - soooo looking forward to day two!
